Outdoor learning in our organic gardens

Since 2006, North County Community Services has been expanding our child development center classrooms into vegetable gardens at each of our child development centers. The vegetable gardens at each site offer learning opportunities for children and their families, and provide fresh produce that is incorporated into the lunches and snacks served to the children.

In March of 2010, NCCS started developing the Gardens at North River Road, in Oceanside CA. This garden is located on the property of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church on a ¾ acre lot adjacent to one of our preschools. The garden is both a production garden for our child development center kitchens, growing 4000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables each year, as well as a community garden that allows families to rent small plots for their personal use. The Gardens at North River Road, provides opportunities for volunteers, families, and child development center children to learn where their food comes from. Our preschoolers benefit from a diet rich in fresh vegetables.
